Nobody in the dim, smoke-filled establishment was likely to even crack a smile during the whole humorless night. Somehow, aspiring comics kept coming and trying out new acts. Their acts never took off. Ever.
It was a miracle the odd club was still in business. The tense city of Eden was really no place for jokes and most certainly not an establishment dedicated to them. The answer to the place's minimal success wasn't very well known. It wasn't something you advertised in a town like Eden...
And that key to their success was sitting in the back at a vacant table. Daine Jules Descordes was a seemingly unimposing figure in her black, off-the-shoulders sweater and her dark designer jeans. She almost looked... normal, approachable. But the semeur de descorde was anything but. Daine was, by no means, nice, normal, friendly, or welcoming. She was a killer, a tyrant, and a liar. A master of sins.
Perhaps it was her rose-colored eyes (a color that was likely to change at any moment) or the business-like pin of her auburn hair that made her seem human. Or the elegant arch of her brows and the perfect shape of her lips that made her seem angelic. But one look at her pointed fangs and her whip-cord tail and you would know her instantly for what was was; a devil. Daine was a creation of Satan himself, sent to Eden on His whim to do His evil deeds. Some would even say she was a work or art.
Many didn't know who she was or what she did. Some didn't care. The sower of discord didn't broadcast herself like some devils. She preferred a subtle, cruel sort of way.
The poor, floundering fool on stage cracked one last, sorry attempt at humor and then fled before the surly crowd could throw things. Hardly Laughing was hardly friendly. It was that very thing that attracted Daine to it. The atmosphere was dark and disagreeable, a fight waiting to happen. Shady business deals took place in the booths and openly on the tables. Hardly Laughing was lawless. Or rather, it followed her laws and her's alone. The bar was, perhaps, it's only redeeming feature. Alcohol was always a saving grace in Eden. The drinks were over-priced but potent and the service wasn't sassy. Which was fortunate for them because Daine would quickly rid herself of sassy servants.
With impossible grace, the female devil stood and stretched her slim frame. Eyes from around the room followed her as she made her way, unhindered, towards the bar. Several of the gazes were admiring, the devil was beautiful in a deadly sort of way, but several more were wary. Those were the people who knew who she was, what she might do.
Daine smirked, her blood-red lips forming the expression with the long ease of practice. Though she was a regular at the humorless comedy club, the leader of the New Devil Delinquents was a presence that you never quite got used to.

[atrb=border, 0, true][atrb=height,350,true][atrb=width,410,true][atrb=cellpadding,10,true] Valentia almost never had a good reason to be at Hardly Laughing. The 'comedians' weren't funny, there certainly weren't any beautiful women just lying around, and the alcohol was more expensive than it was elsewhere. Put plainly, there was never anything good happening there.
That was until she heard that Daine would be there. Though Vale still wasn't fond of the place she knew that if Daine was there she could stomach the place. Something about that alluring devil leader could drive Vale to the ends of the Earth and back again. Loyalty wasn't exactly a devilish trait though.
"Damned place," Vale cursed as she walked in, her deep red eyes scanning the club for her target. It didn't take long to spot that stunning woman though, as everyone seemed to watch her walk over to the bar. Vale wanted to tear a couple of them apart, just to make sure they all knew they couldn't have Daine.
Yet if that was the case she would certainly be beating up quite a number of people. It was hard not to notice someone like Daine after all, but Valentia wasn't big on logic when she could be beating the shit out of someone instead. On instinct she checked to see if her sword was free in it's sheath before she started over towards the bar.
"Quite a few admirers," Vale muttered softly as she settled beside her leader. The woman looked at Daine for only a moment before looking away, knowing if she just stared she probably wouldn't end up looking away any time soon. "Want me to send any of them a sweet message from you? I'm sure they'd be just oh so grateful."
It was a nice way of asking if she could go beat some people up, even if she didn't think she was going to get the permission.

Everything about Daine was designed for that very purpose. "As long as they don't even think about touching, they can live." Her tone was mocking, her accent light. The devil really didn't care one way or another, except for the well-being of her precious property.
Lives generally meant very little to Daine. People were replaceable. Not only was that a thought, it was a way of life. She lived, killed, controlled with the notion that everybody could be replaced. Was it heartless? Maybe. Was it effective? Her results spoke for themselves.
With a smug smile, she turned to the bartender and raised one eyebrow. She never had to pay, never had to do much of anything and she'd be damned if she would even bother to order a drink. As the bartender scurried to ready her vodka tonic with a twist, Daine grew bored with watching him. She was in one of those moods and things were beginning to bore her easily.
With a flick of her tail, Daine turned to survey her establishment once more, "I find this place so amusing," she purred to Vale, almost smiling. Vale was somebody invaluable in a sea of clones. The leader actually generally enjoyed having her near, which was remarkable, "Maybe I'll even go entertain myself with one of the little people." It was an idle threat more than a suggestion. The word games Daine loved so much wouldn't be lost on Vale; entertain me or leave.
As much as she felt a sort of twisted affection for her avid follower, Daine was selfish by nature. She would happily use Valentia for her own gains.

[atrb=border, 0, true][atrb=height,350,true][atrb=width,410,true][atrb=cellpadding,10,true] It was hard to contain the groan of displeasure when Daine said she couldn't beat anyone up. It wasn't as if Valentia was really looking for a serious fight, she just wanted to blow off some steam and be a little territorial. Never though would Vale be able to stop everyone from looking at Daine because the woman was not only horrifically stunning, but knew how to carry herself. Just the way that Vale was denied in that tone she spoke in was enough to re-prove that fact.
It took less than a second for Valentia to decide she needed a drink. Daine had apparently come to a similar conclusion, though she certainly didn't need to utter even a single word to get what she wanted. A simple expression, a slight change, was always more than enough for people to know what it was that Daine wanted as far as Valentia could tell. But then the leader was also a common face in Hardly Laughing whereas Vale was not.
Her disdain for the place still tugged at the corners of her mind as the silver haired devil made a motion for the bartender to get her whatever it was he was getting Daine. She might not even have to pay this time considering present company, which was another perk to hanging around the ever beautiful New Devil Alliance leader.
Not that Valentia really needed more reasons to follow the woman places.
The way that Daine continued, first muttering about enjoying the place before saying she might find someone to entertain herself, made Valentia roll her eyes in frustration. Daine was just like that for some reason, though Vale failed to understand why. "Yeah sure, go find some disgusting disease infected human to 'play' with. That'll be the day," Vale shot back bitterly.
The leader must have known how much it bothered Valentia to hear such things. "In fact why don't you do one better and find some stupid man while you're at it. You know none of them could entertain you like I could." Despite the way she tried to sound as if she didn't care, Vale's eyes betrayed her desires. She wanted Daine to give in to her and one of these days she would have it. She was determined.

you're tragically vain, [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style,width:450px;background-image:url(http://i55.tinypic.com/2ewibcw.jpg);border-top:2px solid #fc1f1f;-webkit-border-radius: 0 0 50 50px;-moz-border-radius: 0 0 50 50px;]you knew I'd adore you for it "Oh?" That one syllable was a threat and a question. The beautiful devil rounded on Vale, one perfect eyebrow raised. Eerily, that soft sweet shade of rose darkened, bleeding into a red that would look more at home pulsing in somebody's veins. Or, spilled across the floor. "You think you could do better?"
Her tail flicked to the side and then back, betraying the amusement underneath her condescending tone. Daine always found Vale so entertaining. Perhaps it was her boldness. The other devil often said things that others wouldn't dare. Probably because Daine would have killed them for it. She was often killing people for lesser things than flirting with her.
With an immaculate sigh, Daine turned her bright gaze to the rest of the room, "Oh Vale, I would break you, I'm afraid. And you are so very valuable to me in your current condition." It was a denial, albeit a graceful one. It was also a reason Vale had probably heard before. Daine felt no need to come up with new excuses when the old ones worked so well.
With a small smile, the devil turned back to the bar and took her waiting drink. Of course, it was exactly what she had wanted, a nice vodka tonic. If it had been anything but, head would have rolled. That was simply Daine's way. People learned to please or they got lost. Cruel but effective. It was that very notion that made all of her businesses so successful, even in the wallowing economy of Eden. The angels would never admit it, but it was the New Devil Alliance that kept the pathetic city financially afloat.
That was another amusing thought and Daine smirked as she took a sip. Eden needed the devious devils. Without them, not much money would be coming into the city, if any at all. Hilarious. Though perhaps Eden's Rebirth wouldn't think so.
"A funny thought in Hardly Laughing? Vale, call the paramedics," she said drily, her voice low. Only her fellow devil would be privy to the joke. Heaven forbid it got around that Daine had a sense of humor. Or worse, that it was anything but entirely mean-spirited. She had a reputation to uphold.

[atrb=border, 0, true][atrb=height,350,true][atrb=width,410,true][atrb=cellpadding,10,true] Ah yes, |
[/color] Vale thought bitterly. This certainly is typical Daine now isn't it? A mystery I do this to myself. Even though she seemed to be convincing herself she didn't know why she kept after Daine it was painfully clear why. The woman was a knockout and one of the only women she had yet to seduce properly. Forbidden fruit, as they said. Valentia ignored all of that though, because to her it was still a complete mystery and would remain one. With a flick of her hand, Vale dismissed what Daine was saying. It was all she could do to hold herself together considering the woman said she would 'break' Vale. Initial urge was of course to grab Daine by her waist and the side of her face to insist she understand through a deep kiss, but that was rather unprofessional. Someday Daine would fall into bed for Valentia, it was just a matter of time. That was what she kept telling herself. Possibly more delusions. " Paramedics. Right," Valentia grumbled with a roll of her eyes. She couldn't say she really understood the exact thing that her leader was thinking of, but that was mostly because she had properly distracted herself with other thoughts. The woman only visibly relaxed once her hands were wrapped around a drink, a rather persistent vice of hers. Being a devil meant that she didn't really get drunk though so she could always blame her addiction on her species advantage. If humans could drink to no end and hardly feel so much as a buzz they might indulge a little too much as well.Taking a long drink, Valentia thought about what she needed to do. Certainly hitting on Daine some more tonight wouldn't do her much good. The woman already made it pretty clear she was in one of those moods. Of course 'one of those moods' pretty much summed up how Daine was about 100% of the time. At least she heard the other woman actually say she needed Vale in the state she was. A proclamation of need wasn't something you got from a devil often. " Alright then, hilarious need for paramedics aside, what are you even doing here tonight Daine?" It didn't take much for the woman to understand that Valentia disliked the place, especially the way she scowled at saying 'here'.[/div] [/td][/tr][/table][/center]

Daine tapped the clear rim of the glass against her bottom lip, those mood-ring eyes still fixed on the audience. Another comedian had taken the stage, to the delight and horror of the crowd. This one surely wasn't going to be an ounce better than the last. They never, ever were.
The expression fixed on the devil's face was a pleasantly disdainful one. In truth, she had no good reason to be at Hardly Laughing except that she owned the damn place and she was bored. "Why do I go anywhere, love? It's all for my amusement." Daine took a generous swallow of her drink, relishing the burn of the alcohol as it slid down her throat and spread through her middle.
Drinking was such a common vice in Eden that even angels could be found drowning their sorrows. A weird sort of balance existed in some bars, where angels and devils could even tolerate being in the same company if the booze was good. Hardly Laughing was not one of those places. Angels weren't denied access but the comedy club was too small for the two species to coexist without trouble starting up.
The 'knockout' devil slid her rose colored gaze back to Vale, the intention in the veiled by long, dark lashes, "And what are you doing here, faithful minion? Couldn't resist my charms?" The joke was light and, coupled with her coquettish look, revealed how good Daine's mood really was. The ruthless leader was in a remarkably amiable mood.
But, fun and games aside, Daine did have something she wanted to discuss with her unofficial bodyguard. A little idea she had been working on in her spare time. But she would wait a couple more minutes to bring it up. It wasn't urgent or anything.
